Shelf will sometime change the way Gems are presented on your Wall, based on the type of action you are performing. For example, users are presented with the Card view when they first login by default, but when they run a keyword search, the view will automatically update to the Snippet view.
With that said, users always have the ability to change how their wall looks, so it fits their unique viewing preferences. This change in view is made by clicking on the View icons, found in the upper right portion of the application, just below your avatar.
